FAMILY THERAPY
Families can be the most rewarding and at times be the most upsetting system to be part of. Each individual within a family system is unique with their own drives, aspirations, needs, and characteristics. At times these unique aspects can cause conflict if there is no better understanding of each other or even space within the family to allow one to flourish in becoming the independent being they are seeking to become. Within the family each individual impacts on others as much as they are also impacted upon by other’s behaviours and interactional styles. Some of the issues brought to therapy could be due to unresolved issues within the family; behavioural patterns that can be overwhelming; conflict; trying to cope with a distressing occurrence that has affected the family negatively and others matters. Family therapy is thus a space where there is consideration, expression and exploration of issues such as:
- the needs of each member of the family;
- working through difficult emotions and thoughts without judgement;
- facilitating a space of caring about each other, and working on strengths to enhance family cohesion and harmony;
- working on improved communication; problem solving skills; conflict resolution skills; and to have an understanding of how the family works as unit in creating a better functioning family unit.
